Mission Avionics and Flight Management

Mission Avionics

Contracted by Airbus Operations Funkwerk Avionics has developed the Mission Computer Subsystem (MCS) for the tanker aircraft Airbus A310MRTT. The Funkwerk Avionics MCS supports the ARO (Air Refuelling Operator) during planning and monitoring of the tanker mission.

Further information is available from the following flyer: Flyer-MCS (pdf)

Since 2009 the system is in operational use in all Airbus A310MRTT tanker aircraft. 4 aircraft are operated by the German Airforce, 2 aircraft are operated by the Canadian Forces. Via respective maintenance and service support agreements Funkwerk Avionics supports the operational use of the system through consultancy, help desks and a continuous upgrade of the MCS Software - oriented on the requirements and experiences made in almost daily operation of the system onboard the aircraft.

The MCS hardware architecture is based on the central airborne processing unit MPU-100, that has been designed and fully qualified in accordance with the requirements for permanent operation in civil and military aircraft. The MPU-100 comprises - in its standard configuration - a powerful Pentium M based CPU board, a rugged 30 GB hard disk, ARINC-429 interfaces, and high-speed 3D-graphics with video input and output, contained in a standard 4 MCU ARINC-600 LRU housing. In addition, its modular design based on the CompactPCI standard allows for easy integration of additional components. The MPU-100 can also be used as a versatile OEM platform on which customers may realise their own application.

Flight Management

Many years of experience in technology, research and development projects - hand in hand with our customers - have created our avionics competence, in line with the European roadmaps for future air traffic management concepts.

Information systems for mission management are our speciality. Traffic information, terrain awareness and navigation information form the basis for our multi-purpose information systems. Clear, concise and customisable. Moving Map systems for General Aviation, GCAS solutions for helicopter operations and experimental GNSS approach displays for regional airlines outline our expertise. And, since Funkwerk Avionics GmbH is an EASA-approved production organisation for avionics equipment, our avionics equipment complies with the latest aviation standards.
Your safety is our main objective. This is why we are constantly striving to make your flight even safer. The CDTI-2000 is designed to support you during your flight and to provide you with exceptional situation awareness of your position, surrounding terrain and traffic, so that you can take suitable measures to avert potential dangerous situations. This integrated solution conserves your valuable panel space while you can still enjoy the convenience of GPS-based Moving Map navigation.

The capability for aircraft to receive airborne traffic data from other aircraft and ground- based systems is expected to be part of the future Air Traffic Surveillance system. ADS-B is a surveillance technique in which aircraft are transmitting position data via a broadcast-mode data link for utilisation by any air or ground user. TIS-B is defined as a broadcast service in which surveillance information is gathered on the ground and transmitted to airborne systems. The CDTI-2000 is capable to process these ADS-B and TIS-B reports as received via the respective data link (VDL Mode 4 and Mode S 1090ES) and to display this traffic information on the screen. This visualisation of other aircraft is possible in a dedicated display mode or in an integrated presentation together with terrain and navigation features. Our CDTI-2000 is certified to JTSO-C113 and C147.
